Liberty Gardens is a home vegetable garden movement reminiscent of the Victory Gardens of World War II. It must, in fact, be different in purpose and tone from the one that took place at that time, over 60 years ago. Ironically, though, the two movements share one primary focus! They were both created to conserve precious energy. Although the United States was swimming in cheap oil in the 1940's, we needed
as much of it as possible for the war effort. Homeowners were asked to grow their food close to home so the farmers would not have to use fuel to deliver their crops to the cities.
Today, however, Liberty Gardens represents a much more far-reaching
movement. Growing food at home seems to have lost the important role
it once held in our daily lives. Homeowners who have a bit of land must ask themselves if that land is still worth caring about as the settlers did when they came to farm and make a home. They needed every square inch to support their
families and conserved energy inside their homes to ensure their
survival. It was called home/land security and it was the real
thing. Liberty Gardens is about the real thing. Consider joining us
by growing some food in your garden and posting a sign!
